Lawmaker Urges Faster Implementation of the Amazigh Official Status

In a written question addressed to the government, MP Lahcen Oudaî, a member of the Istiqlali Group of Unity and Egalitarianism in the House of Representatives, requested clarification on measures taken to accelerate the implementation of the Amazigh language’s official constitutional status and ensure its effective use in public administrations and services alongside Arabic.

In his question addressed to the minister in charge of relations with parliament, the lawmaker pointed to the explicit provisions of Article 5 of the Constitution. This article establishes the Amazigh language as an official language of the state alongside Arabic and recognizes it as a common heritage for all Moroccans without exception.

The MP highlighted persistent difficulties and obstacles hindering the practical implementation of this constitutional mandate. These hurdles particularly affect the widespread use of the Amazigh language across public institutions, daily reception and communication in the language, and its integration into various administrative structures.

The parliamentary question stressed the need to guarantee citizens’ right to complete administrative procedures and access public services in their official language, in line with the constitutional framework governing the position of the Amazigh language within the country’s institutional and administrative landscape.

Lahcen Oudaî called on the executive branch to reveal its planned action plan and emergency measures to make up for delays accumulated in giving full effect to the constitutional status of the Amazigh language, and to ensure its practical use alongside Arabic across all public services and sectors.

The Istiqlali MP also inquired about the existence of a precise timeline as well as monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to move beyond constitutional recognition to practical implementation in services provided to citizens.
