A request from the National Union of Education (UNE), affiliated with the Moroccan Labour Union (UMT), has revived debate over the criteria used to assign new Amazigh-language teaching posts in Sidi Bennour province.
The union’s provincial office sent a letter on September 7, 2026, to the provincial director of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, calling for a correction to how these appointments were handled. The union noted that a number of newly appointed Amazigh-language teachers had been assigned to schools different from those that, under the national transfer process, had seen other Amazigh teachers depart.
The letter argued that this mismatch between two parallel processes — new appointments and transfers — raises questions about the criteria applied, stating that the approach used “undermines, at its core, the principle of pedagogical continuity in Amazigh-language learning.”
The National Union of Education called for the criteria behind these appointments to be disclosed, stressing that expanding Amazigh-language instruction should not come at the expense of continuity in schools that already benefited from it, while ensuring students in schools still in need of the subject can access it.
The union closed its letter by affirming that the request reflects a concern for fair and coherent management of new teacher appointments, in the interest of students and the continuity of Amazigh-language instruction.
