Khemisset Mourns Artist Omar Boutmazought


Amazigh music lost one of its well-known figures overnight with the death of Omar Boutmazought, a native of Khemisset, after a long battle with cancer. News of his death spread with deep emotion among friends and fans.

According to sources close to the late artist, his health had deteriorated in recent weeks while he was undergoing treatment. He leaves behind a significant artistic legacy and a grieving family and public.

Boutmazought had been a familiar name in Amazigh song for decades. He stood out for his distinctive playing of the outar, with which he composed melodies blending traditional and contemporary styles, earning a special place with audiences.

His contribution went beyond singing and playing. Through his work and albums, he helped preserve Amazigh musical heritage and promote it in Morocco and abroad, while encouraging younger generations to take an interest in the art form.

After his death was announced, social media filled with condolence messages from artists, musicians and journalists, who recalled his kindness, humility and steady artistic output.

His funeral is expected to take place in Khemisset, his hometown, with family, friends and fellow artists attending.

With his passing, Amazigh song loses a voice its audience knew well, while his body of work remains a record of a career devoted to Amazigh art and culture.
