Oussama Barik, a young candidate known for his strong presence on Facebook, is leading the provisional results of the legislative elections in Midelt province. With 80% of ballots counted, he had secured 21.19% of the votes cast.
Rachid Alaoui Tayibi of the Popular Movement came second with 11.93%, followed by Marouane Achbaato of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) with 8.94%. The race pitted several established political figures against a new generation of younger candidates.
Barik’s showing is seen as the surprise of the election in the province. Emerging from the world of social media, he managed to turn his online following into real votes at the ballot box, outpacing candidates from traditional parties with deep organizational roots in the region.
These early results point to a shift in the preferences of Midelt’s voters. They appear to have placed their trust in fresh, younger profiles whose message speaks directly to local concerns, particularly in the rural and mountain areas that make up most of the province.
