Israel announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, that it had reached an agreement with Morocco to raise their diplomatic representation to embassy level. The announcement followed a US-sponsored meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers in New York.
In a statement, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said Gideon Saar held talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, at a trilateral diplomatic summit in New York convened at the invitation of Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the United Nations.
According to the statement, the three parties reaffirmed their commitment to a series of measures designed to develop relations between Israel and Morocco. These include converting the two existing diplomatic missions into embassies and appointing an ambassador in each country.
On the economic front, the two sides agreed to finalize two agreements by the end of 2026: one on investment protection and the other on the avoidance of double taxation. The agreements are expected to ease reciprocal investment and boost economic and trade ties between the two countries and their peoples.
The deal also provides for expanding air links between Israel and Morocco to include flights operated by Moroccan carriers, a measure due to take effect by the end of 2026.
Reciprocal high-level visits are also scheduled over the coming months.
The decision shows that Moroccan authorities attach neither weight nor importance to the movements that support Palestine and protest on its behalf for years, particularly in Tangier, regarding them as an insignificant minority.
